What is FOSS Projects?
FOSS Projects is a collaborative design practice led by Sam Glen Hughes, working across type design, open-source tools, spatial concepts, and publication design. The studio explores the space between utility and imagination, building projects that span disciplines and shape new perspectives through open, exploratory design.

Is the course a subscription?
The course is one time payment! Includeing lifetime access to all materials, online resources, font packs, templates, and monthly FOSS font updates.
Do I need prior experience to take the course?
No prior experience in font design is required. The course is designed for all levels—whether you're a graphic designer, artist, illustrator, brand designer, or someone completely new to type design.
How do I access the course materials?
After enrolling, you'll get immediate access to all course materials through the FOSS platform. You'll have lifetime access, so you can learn at your own pace and return to the materials whenever you need.
What software do I need for the course?
You'll need type design software such as Glyphs, FontLab, or FontForge. You'll also need basic materials like paper, pencil, eraser, ruler, and a computer for digitizing your work.
Does the course include critique and feedback?
The course teaches you how to critique and analyze your own work like a professional type designer through guided exercises and iteration frameworks. It's a self-paced learning experience focused on developing your independent judgment.
How long does it take to complete the course?
The course is self-paced and process-driven. Progress comes from repetition and practice, not speed. You can move through the materials at your own rhythm, and you're encouraged to keep all versions of your work as reference points.
Are FOSS typefaces really free?
Yes, FOSS Modern and FOSS Serif are open-source typefaces, completely free to download, study, and build upon. They're designed with transparency in mind and are available for anyone to use, modify, and extend.
